Does RACT fit the AR-15?

Confirmed by owners

Yes. RACT was designed around the AR, and it is the gun owners mount most. A standard AR-15 fits with the AR / Tactical Shotgun kit. Custom builds need a closer look at three things: the stock, the grip and a light on the handguard.

Covers the AR-15 and AR-style rifles and SBRs, including Daniel Defense, Smith & Wesson M&P15, SIG Sauer and HK builds.

What owners report

  • Standard builds fit as they come. Owners name the Daniel Defense DDM4v7 Pro, the Smith & Wesson M&P15 and SIG AR-pattern rifles, and one notes that his SIG did not fit a clamshell safe from another brand.
  • Wide stocks: the stock support's slot is 2¼ in across, as one owner measured it. An owner's .450 Bushmaster had a storage stock too thick for it, so he mounted a different AR with a slimmer stock. Another had to bend the support out to take an aftermarket stock.
  • Vertical grips: on one SBR, a BCM Gunfighter grip got in the way of rotating the rifle out of the trigger cover, and the owner reworked his setup without the stock support.
  • Lights and thick handguards: an HK MR556 A4 with a light kit pressed on the barrel lock and would not release cleanly. Support sent the shotgun-style hinge arm and it works. His advice for an AR with a larger forearm or a light kit is the shotgun hinge.
  • One owner found the takedown pin shield did not reach the pin on his rifle.
  • In a vehicle: an owner attached his RACT and AR-15 to a seat-back MOLLE panel in his truck.

Awesome!

Easy to mount and fit my Daniel Defense DDM4v7 Pro well. Would be even better if there was a way to prevent the safety selector from being moved but otherwise I give this safe a 10/10. Trigger guard is well made and protects the trigger from being touched by unwanted hands

Love it

Got two kids in the house. This lock is perfect. It works great for M&P AR 15. Soon will be getting a shotgun and will need to install one more of these.

Good versatility for your AR configuration.

I had issues with other mounts due to my AR configuration or with AR15 type rifles like SIG that are different enough not to fit in a Hornady claimshell safe. This provides good protection with max configuration options. I may look into a truck type mounting solution for a truck gun. E.g. mounted to a plate bolted to seat mounts or the like.

It took a bit to get things adjusted but my AR fits like a glove. It is a great design and heavy duty material. I would have given it a 5 star but the unit beeps every minute or so even after charging it for hours. I have to leave it plugged in to keep the beeping to stop

I did a review prior so this is an update. Great product as stated. Had trouble getting my HK 556A4 to unlock as it was creating pressure on the forearm. Customer service reached out and sent me the shotgun style arm. Works fantastic. If you have an AR with a larger forearm or a light kit on the end. Def get the shotgun mount.

HK MR556 A4

Great mounting system. Just wish the cuff at the top where the biometric sensor is was a little larger. Very snug with a light kit. Have to push in on the rifle for the sensor to release. Any suggestions from VARA would be appreciated or anyone else with the same issue.

I have the handgun safe front drivers seat and RACT Rifle Safe attached to rear passenger seat

I love both my Reach handgun safe for my Sig P320, and using a BuiltRight Seat Back Molle System, I just attached my RACT Rifle Safe which securely holds my AR-15. I live in Idaho so this setup is perfectly legal. I just have to drill out the bolts for the Molle System and I will be safe and secure.

I’m loving this for my AR

I think this is a great product. Well packaged from the box it comes in to how it was packed for shipping. Easy to follow instruction, didn’t take long to install on my wall. The only improvement would be the base for the stock, it only adjust to the left and right but with some stocks having room for storage they are a little thicker. Make it adjustable the other way or increase it by 1/2”. The stock on my .450 Bushmaster didn’t fit so I used another AR-15 to use this with that had a straight stock without storage. The biometric was easy to program and easy use and worked every time without an issue.

The RACT for my AR-15 and Shotgun

I purchased the RACT for my AR-15 and Shotgun and I’m very pleased with them. It was everything advertised and easy to mount onto the wall and to make the adjustments needed for my weapons.

Works great

High accuracy of fingerprint ID. Easy to install with standard AR15 configuration. A little clunky to remove from the rack. Overall quickest and most reliable product I've found thus far.

Just somethings to understand before you buy!

The fingerprint reader works as fast as advertised however it's a pain to close the lock sometimes. The adjustment bolts on the rear are easy to strip the nuts in their sleeves or whatever that keeps them in place.. so whatever you do try not to overtighten the bolts. And lastly the take down pin cover is not big enough or long enough. It doesn't cover the pin on my AR-15 or my gen-12.

Not for customized AR-15's

Well built but not for customized AR's. I have an SBR with BCM Gunfighter grip and after market stock. First issue-the stock was too wide for the stock support. No problem... I used an adjustable wrench to bend it out far enough so the stock would fit. Once I tightened everything up, I found I could not rotate the AR out of the trigger cover due to the BCM grip's more vertical angle interfering. I wound up discarding the stock support, rotating the gun counter clockwise in the barrel lock, and pushing the trigger cover up and at an angle so that it had very little upper travel, prevent it from being pushed out of the trigger cover and freeing the gun. I also have a weapon light mounted to the handguard which prevents the AR from being pulled through the barrel lock. I changed the light mount screws to tamper resistant type to make it more difficult to remove the flashlight, if for some reason a thief was able to get it free of the trigger cover by removing the grip and cutting rubber material out of the trigger cover. As much as I really wanted it be really hard to steal, it's more about having it readily available and not accessible by the grandkids.

Questions

Which RACT version fits the AR-15?
The AR / Tactical Shotgun kit: the standard hinge and the AR-style trigger cover, which leaves room for the pistol grip. RACT Biometric ships with it; on RACT Keypad, choose the AR / Tactical Shotgun version.
What if my AR-15 is set up differently?
Every part of RACT slides along the rail, so the barrel lock, trigger cover and stock support move to suit your gun's length, scope, light and sling. If your build differs from the owners' here, email support@varasafety.com with the make, model and what is mounted, and we will confirm before you order.
